I’m an interaction designer / developer / researcher within the Centre for Advanced Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art. By applying the skills, methods and tools of new media practitioners within the domain of textile production, my research explores how rich interaction technologies can be used in conjunction with existing design software and fabrication hardware to deliver a sustainable production model that comprises i) design workflow, ii) co-creation experience and iii) manufacturing system. Aside from the economic and environmental benefits of this approach, my primary interest is in exploring the creative opportunities for design(ers) once production shifts from just-in-time to on-demand. Ultimately, the objective is to propose a viable alternative to mass production - I have termed this the ‘multi-production’ paradigm.
