I just came back from Adobe Max 2008 North America and it seems that Adobe has been doing research on multi-touch! I went to Mario Klingemann’s (http://www.quasimondo.com) session where he showed me blob detection he wrote in Actionscript too. He may consider open sourcing his code sometime after Max 2008 Europe.

If there is enough interest, I will organize a user group meeting. I was thinking of doing something akin to Linux installfests but building small development multi-touch surfaces so people have devices to develop on. People can bring in devices they have already built and talk about them. The event will be after the holidays, some time in January in San Francisco. Anyone interested? If so, please respond here so I can get a sense of group size. If you have anything you want to talk about, please post those too.

SoCal event!

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about putting together a SoCal event. I’m in Orange County so I figure it would be reasonable for anyone in OC/LA and SD to attend. And maybe a few NorCal folks might want to make the trek down

This will be an event to primarily bring the NUIgroup community together in person to meet, greet, share ideas and inspiration and learn from each other. It would be a good place to show off your latest projects.

We could also try to coordinate development of a group project (like a multiplayer Arcade classic) that would be unveiled at the event.

If you are interested in attending or being a part of this please let us know. We want to make this something that will appeal to everyone so we need your input.

Adobe and Natural User Interface - Flash Event 2009 Europe

As you might have read on my blog http://www.multitouch.nl/?p=215, We had a meeting with Adobe last week regarding discussions of multi-touch software applications development for Adobe’s software platform, with the main focus on Flash.

One of the things Adobe Germany and Natural User Interface Europe AB discussed was the opportunity to organize together a multi-touch event in Europe for Flash developers in 2009.

Details regarding this event will be available later, however first we want to index what is the best possible location for such an event, meaning that we value a lot your input on where this event should take place.

Because of the fact that there are several hotspots in Europe regarding Flash software developers (active members in Flash communities/people with Flash jobs), we have preselected several locations, of which you can choose your most preferable one, if you would like to attend such an event. As Benelux and Germany are the hotspots in Europe, we have selected several locations in Germany and Holland, closest to these hotspots.

App contest for Interactive video installation

Hello all I’m doing a one night interactive art installation in on December 13th, details here http://www.privatespacepdx.com. One of the exhibits will be the multi touch table that I produced last month http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/3144/

I’m hoping that there are people in the community that like the idea and create an application that fits within the performance goal of critiquing the current media culture. Even if you don’t submit an app, I would like to know which available apps you think fit into this performance. If you know people in Portland please let them know about the event. And if you are as grateful as to put a post on our forum it is much appreciated.

There are some cool VJ apps available for Pure Data that could be modified using reactivision to be really cool.

And of course if your app is chosen you will be highlighted and credited in the exhibit and featured in the installation movie.

Boot-camp on Build Your Own Multi-touch Surface
(Supported by IEEE Workshop on Tabletops and Interactive Surfaces 2008)

This Bootcamp aims to share the knowledge and experience of developers
of multi-touch surfaces with the wider tabletop and interactive
surface community.
Multi-touch interaction with computationally enhanced surfaces has
received considerable attention in the last few years. The rediscovery
of diffused illumination and frustrated total-internal reflection
principles, which allow for building such surfaces at low cost, has
pushed the development of multi-touch applications forward. Although
this and other related techniques have been presented in an academic
setting, the steps involved in building a high quality multi-touch
enabled surface, on a software and hardware level, are not trivial.
By practically demonstrating the steps involved in creating these
interactive surfaces the workshop aims to encourage the exploration of
multi-touch by researchers who may not have considered
self-construction of such hardware viable.

Purple Spheres : New Zealand digital art experiment

Hi everyone, I thought you might like to hear from the purple spheres digital arts week going on in Huia. I was lucky enough to get involved in an experimental project where eight digital artists, animators, programmers, designers have all come together in a house in Huia, with the simple brief “invent stuff”. So far I have been working on a natural human computer interface using ping pong balls with some great processing code, which has been a whole lot of fun. Today I’m starting work on my multitouch table, so you will no doubt see me in the MIRC channel asking for advice I could ramble on, but you should take a look at http://www.purplespheres.co.nz/blog if you would like to see more. I wuld be really interested in hearing your feedback.
