I wanted to get some ideas on how the community could use existing RFID technologies with our applications.

Anyone have any ideas on best place to buy these scanners and RFID chips?

Here is a couple examples:

I think that the way that it was done in that video you linked was one of the best ways to do it. You could have RFID cards/chips which when placed near the table would give access to certain data on screen. You could use them to load new applications, it would be easier to just bring them up on the screen to begin with but this would allow better cataloging and many people would find the analogness nice.

Hey nuiman, i bought RFID reader and writer and Tags of ebay to test them they are quite cheap for the devices that they are you should take a look i got 20 tags and reader and writer for $110 CAD. the worst thing about the reader and writer is that it connects to a serial port and currently i only have one on my test rig…

Cheers

something neat could be detecting a person… if a person is near the screen, associate the touches closest to them with them… of course any app that would have people reaching over or between each other would possibly screw that up

@Th0m: sadly RFID doesn’t have a proximity/location detection features, it can only detect if the RFID tag is within the range of the transponder and preform the specific event associated with the tag…

Here’s a quick test i did with motion tracker and a Phidget Distance sensor a few months ago. I’ve refined this quite a bit for a interactive installation piece I’m working on for the lobby of my office. But this was my first prototype test.

It does. The RFID kit http://www.phidgets.com/products.php?product_id=2002 works on it’s own.

I love this idea. The one thing I want to see and or use would be blue tooth. I want to be able to have my cell phone placed down on the screen and download my pictures. My pictures would goto a photo app that you can look at them the ones you want to keep you save by sliding or flickin them off the screen to one side. The other side would be for flickr. Thats my idea

For RFID can you have a symbol on the bottom so when you place it on the table it reacts?? This could solve the problem of being too far away and the RFID being picked up by the computer.

I’ve added RFID capabilities to my table (certain area of the table bezel has a RFID reader underneath) that can detect the presence of PDA’s.

The thing is; you need to tag your mobile devices with a RFID chip.  What I did was create my own carrier board with an RFID reader that slides into the Compact Flash slot on the PDA device.  This way, there is no visible modifications to the PDA device.

I used the phidgets RFID board because it interfaces right into Flash.

If you want to make your own board, you can interface the RFID with arduino.

“What I did was create my own carrier board with an RFID reader that slides into the Compact Flash slot on the PDA device”

how did you modify it so it fit into a CF slot.
