Giggs you are correct… its the quality of the camera, that really matters. You can get the xbox cam for around $10 the philips spc 900nc for around $20~40 but the fireflymv is a minimum of $399.

if you really are looking for a good camera, for a decent price you should check out the Unibrain Fire-i BW its for $120 and its probably the most economical, if you are just building a setup for testing purposes or just a one off device.

I actually got my Firefly MV for $299 + $50 s/h. Haven’t tested Unibrain yet, but it seems good for its price.

AlexP -> Is it possible to place the lasers right in the corner, instead af the distance you use? Or will there be a problem with that?

That will depend on the line lens you are using. Remember the laser light plane needs to cover the whole screen.
Since with my lenses the light spread is 120 degrees, I could have mounted the lasers right on the edge or even inside the plexi area. This was just quick and dirty way of testing dual laser setup.
I am currently working on larger and more elegant setup. Stay tuned, I’ll be posting the results.

Can anyone confirm where to buy the lasers and lenses?  And is it true you can use acrylic rod as a lens?

Yes you can use the acrylic rod as a line lens, however the light intensity will follow the gaussian distribution. In another words the intesity will be the highest in the center and it will drop the farther you go towards the edges.
In my first setup, this is what I used and the blobs on the edges were so faint that they were very hard to detect.
This is why I discovered a non-linear cylindrical lens that generates light of an uniform intensity throughout the line.
As you can see the results that I’m getting with this solution are awesome.

PM me if you are looking for some laser modules.

Hi Alex,

I’m using your fixed binaries with my microsoft vx1000 webcam set to 30fps at 640x480 and have some nice blobs with my DI setup (standard rear DI filters).

However i’m seeing that the fps is only 19-20 fps with a dual core E6750 running Vista… and if i move my hand rather quickly i lose the blobs until i slow down (same with the original binaries, except i cant see the fps)..

Any idea what the cause might be? and why i’m not getting the full 30fps?

Update:
by setting the webcam exposure time lower (40-45 instead of the default 80) i get now 29-30 fps.. but i do lose some of the blob clarity.. Still dont like the speed though :( maybe the filters need more frames to get the maximum blobs out of it :(

Hopefully with the IR laser setup blob tracking will go a bit faster when moving faster, but i think i might have to buy a better webcam.. smile

@ Helza1: One of my setups has a VX-6000 and I’m having the exact same problem you described. I’m actually getting around 16 fps with a dual core E7500 on Vista x86.

Although, it doesn’t seem to be a problem with Alex’s fix, because the response is equally bad with previous versions of Touchlib.

I’ll try adjusting the exposure as you said. It makes sense if we consider that “exposure” might actually mean “shutter time”.

The funny thing is I seem to get the full 30 fps with Microsoft’s configuration app (the Lifecam software) even when setting the exposure to the max.

All in all, I think the VX cams (along with its drivers and software) do suck for MT.

Hi downloaded the .rar files by AlexP fixes/optimization. Each one of them have atleast one corrupted DLL, is that how its suppose to be? Its like this:

Part 1 has cv100.dll as 0 bytes
Part 2 has cxts001.dll and touchlib.dll as 0 bytes
Part 3 has touchlib.dll as 0 bytes

What am I missing?

The shutter speed will definitely dictate your camera’s target frame rate. And yes, the laser setup will give you brighter blobs that will allow for faster capture frame rates. Let us know how the IR lasers work with your setup.
