Hi NUIs
I am Johannes from Germany. I am doing my postgrad studies in Computer Sciences at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences and I started ‘writing’ my Master’s thesis at the begin of February. Main concerns of my work will be usability issues and best practices with multi-touch applications.

In order to be able to come to some findings regarding usability and best practices i will build an ftir table and additionally take care of the Johnny Cung Lee stuff with the infrared light pen(s) and the wiimote. I try to build both solutions in a way that they will communicate with applications via TUIO to provide means to use different multi-touch hardware with the same applications to be able to evaluate and compare different technologies.

Currently I am collaborating with an Interaction design student from the Central St. Martin’s College in London. We are going to build a Flash application on which details can be found (later on) at our project blog Digital Volvelles. Additionally I am collaborating with another postgrad Computer Science student in Wiesbaden who will build a TUIO client for Quest3D, which is a 3D prototyping software from the Netherlands (somehow the Dutch people seem to be strongly interestes in that User Interface stuff, hihi). By doing this we are aiming to provide a solution with which we can rapidly develop 3D applications for multi-touch hardware that we can afterwards test (and evaluate) in order to find out how 3D applications can be integrated with multi-touch.

Currently I am trying to find some Graphic/User Interface Designers and/or Product Designers that want to collaborate in developing interfaces and/or multi-touch hardware, infrared light pens and so on. I should rather say this in advance: We are doing this on an (hopefully high) academic level and not for making money (so … not yet, hihi). If you’re interested nonetheless just drop me a mail.

I wonder if someone reads this long post…

I wrote an article about how TUIO integrates with your applications on our project blog:

Hey I’m Justin and I’m from the US but still would like to work w/ you. I can help w/ the graphics. I also use flash. I have already made some IR light pens that run off of a 1.5 v aa battery. Not sure if the battery’s are the same in Germany. Anyway I have done some tests w/ Johnny Cung Lee’s method. I have some ideas to build it into my DI set up. By the way my set up is 60% done. Check out my own blog and get intouch w/ me on some graphics.
Thanks,
Justin

Unfortunately the project i am doing is a collaboration work with the German police. Thus every participant in the project has to sign a non-disclosure agreement. I think if I tried to include you in the project I would get into troubles.

But I’ll keep you informed about other project collaboration opportunities!

Whoever is interested in trying out this Johnny Chung Lee’s Wii Remote Whiteboard stuff on his Mac in Bootcamp (however, you should definitely consider to use Uwe Schmidt’s neat piece of software for the Wii remote for the Mac: http://www.uweschmidt.org/wiimote-whiteboard) you can have a look at my blogpost regarding how to pair a Wii Remote with a Mac in Bootcamp via Bluetooth:

We took part in an exhibition with our Digital Volvelles application and our FTIR table at the Mall Galleries in London.

You can see some impressions of it on my flickr photo stream.

Additionally, we’re going to update our blog with some background information about the application and the exhibition.

I’m still working on the video because somehow I messed up with the quality (damn, next time I will use a DV cam instead. It’s tedious to copy the whole footage to the computer but still you know what you get…). There’s someone else who did a nice job documenting it on video. But firstly I’ll have to get his footage.

i’ve built a small phot app based on the examples i found in the AS3 folder:

i skipped the random angle because i found the random angle irritating and difficult to predict for the users. i skipped the rotation as well because i found it unnecessary for such a small table.
