Alot of people have asked me what materials they should use for a LLP setup , I made this thread as a repository in wich we can list diferent sources for getting lasers and line lenses.

I’d recomend Aixiz.com , they have a great range of lasers and the IR ones are incredibly cheap.

For about 9$ a pop , you get a 10mW IR 780nm Laser and a 120 degree lense.

Laser here and Lense here

Curently I’m waiting for my order to arive so I have not tested these , but I think Justin is using exactly this module and lense.

Will come back with tests and other interesting stuff when I get them.

Wow that seems very inexpensive, can anyone post their experiences with this company\lasers.

Well I’ve read online alot of good stuff about them , just sent them an email to see what shipping to Romania would be , because their shipping page says it’s 5$ , and that’s impossible.

Beside the risk of burning a hole in your eye, would you benefit from a higher laser intensity? There is a 100 mW module for $25. Would that result in better blobs?

I think that would be overkill for our application…

That’s real overkill , I actualy think I’m gonna go for the 5mW , that should be alot safer for my eyes , can’t wait for their email response.

This is a fantastic development, I will keep an eye on these. And you Vlado! Can’t wait to see your results with this. The cost is just amazing, a much better alternative than a $90 laser from AlexP…

Those look really nice and a great price.  Unfortunately I’ve already bought two from Alex for my table that should be shipped already.  I wish I would have waited ... $20 for two instead of over $200 ... ouch!

Well Alex’s modules where custom built , and I don’t know the quality of these lasers yet.Still expecting an email from them , if I don’t get it I’l have to route my package to a friend of mine who lives in the UK , and that’ll take some time.

Great find Vlado!

I already got a few of 780nm with an adjustable output level from AixiZ. Because of the variable output you can better tweak your setup…
I got some great results with 780nm wavelength (and CCDs are more sensitive in this range).
The only problem is that there is no exact IR bandpass filter for this wavelength.
I tried both 780nm (FB780-10) and 800nm (FB800-40) from thorlabs.
The 780nm is too narrow and it does not perform well (similar to its equivalent FB850-10 for 850nm).
So I ended up using FB800-40 and this works really well.

A little bit confusing. Are you saying that the 780nm laser modules work well, but do not produce very good blobs? Or that in general, these really are not good?

I believe he’s referring to the bandpass filter rated at 780nm when talking about it being too narrow.

Helpful information Alex, I have a bandpass filter from somewhere else (bought off eBay) that was rated at 880nm.  I’ll probably need to buy a different one since I’m not using 850nm LED’s like I was planning to before I read about your LLP method.  Nice to have a reference of one that works well for those lasers.

I was refering here to the 780nm narrow bandwidth filter (10nm). This is the only one I could find on ThorLabs website.
From the tests I performed 10nm bandwidth is too narrow and cuts too much light. This was true for 850nm as well as for 780nm.
This is why I chose 800nm with 40nm bandwidth.
Ideally, you would get best results with a filter that has its center value (CWL) at 780nm and bandwidth (FWHM) of 20nm.

Thanks , also Alex I have a few questions about laser safety I’d like to ask you about. Do you use MSN so we can have a chat?
