My acrylic was cut with a saw so the edges are not transparent. How do I make them transparent?

You have to use sandpaper to polish them, mine were the same, i have a step by step guide on my blog on how i polished mine http://mtaha.wordpress.com/category/hardware/acrylic-hardware/

You polish it, here is the info from NUI Wiki:

In my case I used coarse and fine sandpaper to smooth the edges as much as possible, then used my car Scratch remover polish, and then topped it with the regular fine car polish. All by hand. That did the job for me with excellent results…

You could find someone around your area to flame polish it for you too. This gave me good results.

an orbital buffer (like for cars) works quite nicely, not high risk.  it works best after high grit sand paper
