We currently do not intend to distribute the iPhone app as open source, because you would need to pay $99 to Apple to get it on your iPhone. Instead we will put it on the App Store soon, so everyone can download it for free.
This does not make sense to me… so you are not opening source because “you need to pay $99 to Apple”? or will you offer for free on App Store and still release source?
Can’t we just hack the SDK to run apps?
Anyone know much about the Pwnage Tool? It allow for us to test our apps without the $99 TAX.
Example quote is from their site: http://wikee.iphwn.org/
Apple’s low-level APIs, used in the open tool chain, contain some objects and methods that have been intentionally left out of the Apple SDK, to help control what developers can and can’t do. These include limiting what frameworks they can use as well as certain objects, such as UIPreferencesTable, in order to prevent your application from having as much functionality as preloaded applications. You can take advantage of these hidden APIs and still use the Apple SDK with some changes to your build flags. Please note that this is not “authorized” by Apple, and may disqualify your application for distribution in the AppStore. It is ultimately up to them which APIs they say you can “officially” use.
With this we are able to compile any source code and release to our iphone/ipod touches (even the 3G)
I really HATE… how Apple is herding its developers into very rigid “terms"… it’s only purpose is to control the flow of ideas and manage what applications are “officially” released. It should be illegal for Apple to charge $99 to TEST our OWN applications on our OWN hardware…
I’m sorry to rant… but Apples choices with their SDK are a direct slap in face to open source development…
