Howdy!

I’ve been perusing the site for a while, collecting ideas and information. So, now that parts are coming in the mail and in return for the info I’ve received thus far, I figured I’d join and add my voice to the movement.

As a college student living in a tiny apartment with a restricted amount of income, my design has to be especially functional and multi-task.  The finished product has to also be of a quality to withstand years of use attractively and be easily accessible for upgrading and repair.

So, I’ve settled on a design dividing the cabinet and tabletop into manageable and more affordable chunks with some attractive features.  Since the budget for this project is coming from my fund for a TV, coffee table, and new computer, it has to be all three things at the same time, or with slight modification.

With this concept in mind, the concept has a 1/2 inch makrolon (polycarbonate) surface capable of bearing loads, the projector is kept in brackets for easy removal and accurate replacement, and the cabinet folds out for added tabletop space when necessary and to place the projector on for wall viewing.

Nothing ground-breaking, modest specs, but a platform that can accomodate any of the available technologies without requiring a rebuild as well as adding increased mechanical functionality.

And also a shiny example to show off and spread the MT message on a college campus full of engineers with too much time on their hands…

Welcome to the forum. I like your idea and was thinking about something like this today. If I use a LCD for my table why would I need one in the conner of my room? Maybe it can flip up to be viewable and flip down to be a coffee table again?? just an idea 1 TV not 2

Also a good idea.  After I had laid out 90% of the plans for my current project, I had started toying around with the concept of a positionable screen, and some of the unique troubles that would come from it. It’s a very feasible idea, and even more so in the case of utilizing an LCD screen, It would just take an extra bit of consideration.

If a screen is mobile, and depending on the illumination method, then the major concerns are either in getting the projected image to the screen (not a problem with LCDs) and getting the camera to see the screen.  The first option, of course, being to abandon the multitouch capability in TV mode, since a TV is best controlled by remote anyways.  The second option is to rig a series of simple machines that position the camera (or a mirror) in a location that would accommodate the new screen position. The third option is to have 2 positions that the setup can be in (flat table or upright TV) and have a simple system for repositioning the equipment manually for each transition.  And if you really want to get technical, you can also install switches that automatically detect the position and select the appropriate camera calibration/configuration files so you don’t have to run it every time you switch (which would most likely be at least on a daily basis).

One of my original ideas was to install the screen into a drafting table that my family used to have, but alas, it was sold in my absence.  Not to mention it would have been dreadfully heavy…

I like your style smirk

As far as I can tell, this is getting into some uncharted territory as far as builds go, and I for one want to see how far it can go

I’m curious to see what kind of ideas the rest of the community has, so I’ve started a new thread in a more noticeable locale (hardware>general discussion) http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/2549/

I’ve always been a fan of sessions resembling think tanks, as they often yield drastically different ideas.
