You would need a lot of ultrasonic sensors to do it that way.  I was thinking just have a white background and have the camera search for imperfections(person standing infront of it).

I think these are simply 12 TFT displays without background illumination. The background light comes from outside, so you can have nice shadows of the black leaves.
