Based on the replies I got before regrading cameras that don’t have a IR filter to begin with - can we get a list of cameras that have a really easy to remove IR filter?

I am collecting brands and model numbers and will start posting summarized information :]

Creative Webcam N10225 Model No. PD1110 - No IR Filter apparently - Future Shop/Best Buy - North America

SWEEX USB 2.0 1.3 Megapixel camera - Easy to remove IR Filter - MediaMarkt - Belgium

PS2 Eye Toy - easy to remove IR filter - wherever PS2 accessories are sold

XBOX Cam - has IR filter applied to lens - allows IR light to pass

List grabbed from the wiki that not many people are using:

DanKn - Creme de la Crap, no name brand. Frame rate:640 x 480 30 f/s;1280 x 960 10 -15 f/s USB 2.0

jason - Logitech Quickcam Chat (budget), IR filter removed, 7 fps @352x188 on Linux, USB 1.1

alan - Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX, removed IR Filter, 30fps @ 640x480.

BBatchelder - Microsoft VX-6000, IR filter removed, 30fps @640x480, USB 2.0.

Bilsky - Phillips SPC900-NC

Chrizz - Phillips SPC900-NC (mounted a Philips PCVC740K lens, removed ir-filter)

Davman - Phillips SPC900-NC

paulzain - Point Grey Dragonfly2 + Computar 1.8mm lens

Pleh - Phillips SPC900-NC

Sidje - Samsung VP-D101 FW with build-in but bad IR filter - Creative webcam 3 USB1.1

Gravano - Sweex WC001 (budget) Phillips SPC900-NC (for improved performance)

jibberia - Point Grey Firefly MV

juwaidah1990 - Logitech QuickCam Messenger, IR filter removed, Linux compatible.

BlaXwan - Unibrain Fire-i board camera, firewire, you can order it with lens without ir-filter (4.3 and 1.9 mm fish-eye lens), 640x480@30fps

Matthew180 - Sony MiniDV DCR-HC40, firewire, 720 x 480 @ 60f/s.  Has a “Night Shot” mode which internally removes the IR filter so it is perfect for capturing the IR blobs.  I had this camera already so I used it, but probably overkill and certainly an expensive way to go.

Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000 and it has got an easy to remove IR-filter. It’s just a little piece of glass behind the lens which will pop out by using a knife. Dixons - Netherlands

You need to remove the IR block filter and install the IR Pass filter, otherwise your camera will be blind.

O and Logitech Quickcam Zoom, requires some initial force, but the results are great.

I think I bought it at Dixons in the Netherlands here.. But I guess you can buy it in almost every country.

You mean a list of cams that work with macs?

I would imagine that the cam itself would have a Mac Compatible rating on it, if anyone can comment on that to clarify, thanks.

Maybe add the webcam list with webcams that have x64 bit drivers for the x64 users like me smile

Microsoft VX 1000 has x64 drivers, so that’s a start : )

For cameras that work on macs, try using MacCam it is a simple bundle that you install and it will make most any video aware application able to use USB webcams that are on the maccam supported camera list, which is almost every camera listed in the initial post and many, many more. Additionally if I have been reading everything about touch lib correctly, it uses Open-CV for it’s base, and I was able to get Open-CV and a PS2 EyeToy working quite well on my PowerBook G4 even in low light, though I have yet to try and start doing anything with multitouch.

I didn’t see anything about the KinaMax Webcams.

http://www.amazon.com/kinamax-6-LED-Infrared-Night-Vision-WebCam/dp/B000GO6DP6

So I thought i’d post.
Has anyone tried using these cams ? What are the FPS/Resolution Constraints on them?
Do these cams come without an IR Filter?

I tested out a similar cam, only the outer body is different, these are very bad, around 640x480 resolution at max 10fps
