I was watching WIRED Science on TV tonight and there was a segment on a commercial Multitouch table. The company was TouchTable.com… a very neat application of a multitouch setup that apparently uses LCD Screens with an FTIR type setup. From what he described, the IR LEDs are setup on 2 sides of the surface, and there are “receivers” on the other side? The onboard computer processes the interference between the emmitter and receiver leds, and captures that location. At least, that’s how he describes it.

I know a few of you have been playing with LCD setups, and was wondering if you had seen this???

New to me.

There product design is a bit ugly when compared to the other commercial alternatives.

I’ve never seen that either.

I agree the design is a bit uninspired, but it’s a good idea that it’s adjustable.  If it can be made into a flat table and tilted at a 45 degree angle then that’s pretty useful… especially for users with limited mobility.

From what I saw in the interview, they are really trying to market this as a collaborative tool to be used on site, in industry and even military. As a replacement to those large glass “war room” tables. They also showcase a bunch of Geological Information applications. He didn’t do a very good job of “selling” the table though. He kept talking about the apps, and didn’t make a very good case for getting the table rather than using your laptop. I know why it’s cool, but not sure if most viewers got that same impression.

Either way, the thing I liked most was it’s compact nature and portability. But at over $50k, I’m please to know I might be able to make something (albeit a little less compact), for only a few hundred bucks - so I guess I better get started!
