hi ,
this is my first post.
first of all i would like to say there is amazing work being done and knowledge/guidance being shared and m happy to be part of it. smile

I started reading topics on multitouch after i saw the video of Pranav Misty from Ted.com.

so Before this video i really thought that all this stuff is very hitech and pretty costly.  but he showed the demo using things which are readilly available and he himself said can be made very cheapily. the only thing i coudnt understand was mapping and programming the actions to gestures but ill continue reading about it.. during this search i found this video on mouseless interaction with the lappy using just your hand. watch it here..its realy cool..  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHGODp0b8Ks

so i figured that cameras and IR are pretty useful things and can be made to do brilliant stuff..and i moved to find more uses about the it and discovered multi touch table. I have decided to make my own table but i want it to be stylish as i really cant afford to make one just for the heck of it. So i need everyone’s help heresmile
I read a lot but i am stuck at few things and i want total clarity n the material before starting as i said i dont have the luxury of making a test table..

1. Best options appear to be FITR and LLP but due to safety reuirements as there are kids around i think its best to FITR.  OR i can use LLP without risk?
because i think any kid of table’s height will be subject to eye risk?
2. All the tables have a box shapes with some even putting the entire cpu parts there by making very complex.
I am OK with using my laptop to connect it so i guess i just need to put a projector and camera , mirror in the cabinet. rite? is there any more stylish design?

I saw one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVD_Lvv4UOI
this is very stylish but it appears this one is using llp and can be used in dark room only. is this thing acheivable in FITR , usable in broad day light.. or somethign like attached img (plesse se the attched img)..is it doable?

3. even if i make it like a table it will require a delicate handling i mean can we put any material layer so that it bcms scratch resistant and can be used like any normal table too when off.?

4. which glass material is best most of the projects here seems to be using acrylic is that the best or we can use some thing else. Also, whats the best mix of elements for compliant layer .  Can somebody plz list of the substances to be put above the sheet.(acrylic) and in what order and quantity.

5. projector , we need it vertical but it is made to be horizontal and mounting it vertical can cause heating problems.. so i think we need mirror for that.. can sumdy plz post simple diagram of mirror placement && how to determine its size given the dimenstions of table?

6. Do we have to dismantle the webcam? can’t we just get one .. since i dun have seperate webcam just the one inbuilt in lappy so ill have to buy what would b the cheapest option? which doesnt require dismantling smile

Thanks in advance,
m a newbie here so if there are some qs here which i shud have got the answers very easily then i hope youll paste the link of tht thread..waiting for the replies to my questions.

Hi and welcome.
First of all, you are trying to walk before you can crawl. Or at least skip as many steps as you possible can.
This is however not the right way of doing this, believe me.
From the moment i registered here it took me about a year to construct my table and i´m not finished by far, although it works like a charm. grin
What i mean is that you should read up and lurk the forums, all your answers are already answered. Many times over.

Good luck!

@limpa hi ... thanks for the advice .. ill keep in mind and try to read more

i read a lot about safety, also the thread which is specifically named as safety warnings.
i included it in my post to know if after that somebody has been able to find any alternative to it becoz from what i have read llp is more precise than ftir… but if there is no work around then ill concentrate on Ftir smile

thanks for the prompt response again.. i would appreciate any help with the other questions…

Regarding your question about the webcam, you can buy a modified webcam at peauproductions.com/store. However, before you buy it you need to know the wavelenght of the IR light that you are going to use in order to purchase the camera with the correct Band-pass filter.

If you are planning to use FTIR, you need led strips or buy the leds separately and solder them. IR LEDs are available in different wavelenghts from 780 nm to 940 nm. The preferred wavelenght is 850 nm since it is best picked by the PS3 eye webcam. If you use 940 nm LEDs and buy a PS3 eye webcam you may have trouble to see the blobs clearly. If you use 780 nm leds you will have trouble with day light. That’s why 850 nm LEDs are preferred.

With that in mind, you could buy the PS3 eye modified webcam with an 850nm BP filter. There’s a lot of additional information at peauproductions.com regrading leds, ledstrips, lasers, webcams, etc. Take a good look at it before you purchase anything.

@Fike . Thanks a lot!! this website is very useful.
and the page ---> http://peauproductions.com/ftir.html explains the whole screen setup which i asked ( order of things placed my Q4) in the best possible way i have seen so far and in very simple/layman terms.

however on this page and the thread mentioned on this page says one thing which is confusing me :"Advantage : # An enclosed box is not required”
so far all the images of FTIR mtt has enclosed box so how come the advantages say box not req?

Maybe it is a comparison between Rear DI setups and FTIR setups.

Rear DI setups do require an enclosed box because the camera will pick some of the light that bounces from the walls of the box and reflects in your fingers.

Check the video that appears at the first link mentioned in this post

http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/10516/

I think the setup is LLP (not FTIR) but it does not require an enclosed box and it looks great!

ya though the first link is not playing the video i followed it around and found the video to be the same one i have noted in my post above ( see link in Q2). and as i said i too think this is llp.

So as of now as per my understanding
*LLP can be made without enclosed box (though all videos r in dark room, not sure abt its performane in day light) && with major limitation: it has eye risk.
*FTIR needs a box.

if there is any contrary fact please tell me…

thugh there is apparently an interview by “creator” on this link :http://www.djtechtools.com/2010/08/13/touch-screen-dj-interfaces-hot-or-hype/ according to which this video was faked.. :( he recorded it and then during
recording made hand gestures to make it look like its tocuh screen working.. said it was kind of preview to what his project will look like…
