Hello there

I want to present to you my TouchContinuum.
It is a continuous musical instrument.

It is basically a clone of the Haaken Continuum Fingerboard which is great and all but financially by far out of reach for me grin
I wrote it using the Kivy framework. By the next week I hope I will manage to release it on github.com.

Any feedback and maybe even future contributing is welcome!

Im looking forward to seeing it too.
If I get time I might start writing a Harmonic Table controller like this: http://www.c-thru-music.com/cgi/?page=prod_axis-64
It would be cool to have a set of free musical instruments for kivy!

Thanx to all of you.

@grmcom: cool idea! I clicked the link, saw it, and just thought “why is jordan rudess not yet using this?” - then i scrolled down and: the master himself presents the instrument grin

@ISoree: Yeah, i’ll try to give in some updated informations.

Right now, i’m working on the following:
- implementing tumbnails for the appearance settings panels because the image loading of about 30 fullHD images currently takes years…
- implementing a bunch of settings in the native kivy settings panel (including the midi settings which were fixed to default till now)
- enableing the choice of polyphone and monophone mode (and on monophone mode AND pitch-lock active: normal mode or legato mode - maybe you know this feature from the Haaken)
- writing a file-choose-settings class which inherits from settingsItem class
- general refactoring of the code
- and i just started to work on a very cool feature: zooming the keyboard in (and only in) the x axis to fit it to your device / resolution / comfort. This would be done like scrolling except with two fingers where both are pulling in another direction (like NUI zooming wink ) - quite difficult because i’m writing all of the finger tracking/interpretation from scratch - i wish i never had the idea wink

well, thats the status at the moment. I just started my studies on electrotechnics and communication in berne, switzerland on monday… Looks like i will (honestly! there’s not much to learn for me right now.) have time for keeping the work up the next weeks.

Cyril, this is amazing! really cool instrument and performance smile
It is awesome that you are open sourcing touch continuum. Hopefully you will receive lots of great contributions. I would love to try it out and play with it, although I am not so good with music :p. I will test this on our tables in the lab which are running Linux 64bit as soon as I can fork your repository. I was thinking, a multi user feature would be so awesome. With a multi user version the band can gather around a table top and each use their own instrument grin. Keep up the great work and keep us updated!

Looks cool. But I’m more into making music myself. But there’s a project called TouchLive which comes very close to your idea i think. It’s also written with Python and Kivy.

Hey Stocyr,

I think this Engadget or BoingBoing would pick this up if submitted.

If you don’t mind, I’ll submit this to a few sites, unless you want to do it yourself.

I’m basically dumbstruck by how amazing this has turned out.  I’m prepared to give up 20 years of bass playing to learn continuum!

stunning,

Hey db

Nice to hear from you again smile
Yes, sure I don’t mind! Do whatever you think is the best to spread the word of the app.
Maybe I can give you a few informations which you can build in the text /description / blog-post if you want (to prevent misinformation to be spreaded concerning the app and my person itself):

I’m playing the piano since about 12 years now. Two or three years ago, I discovered Dream Theater and fell totally in love with their music. After few months I founded the band Liquid Rain (http://www.liquidrain.net) with a friend who plays guitar.
While concerning myself intensely with Dream Theater I noticed the power that can be unleashed with an instrument like the Haaken Continuum Fingerboard (played mainly by Jordan Rudess). So I first thought of making one in hardware.
After a few unsuccessful attempts I throw the idea away. Then one day, I came across the NUI group… And the first idea I had was: Why not doing i virtually? So I created that 27” setup. Then I searched a language and a framework for graphical multitouch apps.
After evaluating java, flash and so on, I decided to take python and kivy. So I learned python about 8 weeks ago and started to get used to kivy. I’m now doing the final refactoring and a few additional features.
In a few weeks, our band is going to go in the studio to record our first album grin (teaser under http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBfkmHh8IUo). During this time I will keep up releasing videos of the TouchContinuum and of curse there will be an appearance in our album!

You’ll soon see how I did all these cool effects wink

Rock’n Roll,
Cyril Stoller

hi thanks now for sharing it. I’ve maybe the 1st dumb question in here: How is it possible to change the resolution of the app? It starts always in 800x600 or similar (doesnt know now exactly). If I go to setup --> kivy --> fullscreen on --> nothing happens also after a restart of the app every change is lost (background, keyboard, pitch and so on)

Don’t realy think its your fault but maybe you can give me a hint to solve this smile

(downloaded the kivy 1.0.7 and dragged your main.py over the kivy.bat to start)
