I think the term “Multi-Touch” is already too common and widespread to qualify as a valid trademark.

The funny thing is that the trademark doesn’t involve multi-touch tables. It’s primarily about handheld phones/ organizers.
The other thing that I find pretty strange is the fact that you can apply for such a trademark. Multi-touch is just a regular word and is even used for non-computer related items: http://www.multitouch.com/

You can apply for any trademark you like (if there aren’t any absolute grounds for refusal), and it’s not the job of the trademark office to look if your trademark can be defended or not.

Here it is again anyhow

http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&r=3&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1="gesture+dictionary"&OS="gesture+dictionary"&RS="gesture+dictionary”

There are other applications for the patenting of gestures and also multitouch technologies/interfaces etc. While we all have certain feelings about big corporations and monopolies etc, there may be a point of view (and I have seen evidence within these forums) that there needs to be a standardization of the gestures used on touch interfaces in order for them to be universally successful.....?
