Well...I stopped liking them right after I saw the $27.50 each price point lol…

Seriously, I bought 150 pieces of 110mw output LEDs for $39...I’m absolutely sure those are not your best output/$ ratio.

And if you’re trying to get the most output in the smallest size...go Surface Mount rather than conventional LED package.

I agree about the price, but I also belive that fewer LEDs are required, check out this link
http://multitouch.fieryferret.com/ the results seem encouraging.

Someone has more experience with these LEDs?

My version is (probably) overkill, but I figured too many was easier to work with than too few.

As for which is ‘better’ between surface mount and conventional LED packages, it really is a matter of preference.
As I keep repeating, the surface mount packages are dramatically thinner and frequently have a flat or near flat top.
That made it easier for me because I could make a one sided circuit board, solder everything to it, lay it in a piece of aluminum U-channel, and slide that over the edge of my acrylic...and I was basically running...The U channel I found was not an exact snug fit over my acrylic...but once I tucked the roscoe & such under the edge, I was able to jam a piece of thin plastic edging like that used for fiberglass wallboard in and it wedged the whole assembly tightly in place, and with the roscoe tensioned so it doesn’t get ‘floppy’ if I make the screen vertical.

Performancewise, there should be no difference between similar SMT and conventional LEDs, it is stricly a matter of ease of mounting....so it you have a good mounting scheme for conventional LEDs...use em lol

I have used these LEDs and they are extremely bright! 8 of them on one side of a peice of 1/4” acrylic measuring 12"x16" will blind my webcam thru my lcd! I had to run them in series at around 7 volts to dim them enough to use them.  Also the price is for 20 LEDs. If you look at my other posts I have a link to the same seller on ebay currently selling 100 of them and the going price is something like 37 dollars. If I had a bigger monitor to play with I would be all over that.
