I disassembled a 19” Micron LCD monitor.  The stripped LCD panel appears to block all visible light and some IR.  The screen appears like a mirror (see first pic)..  Even when you hold it up to a sun lit window no light comes through (2nd pic).  However, when viewed from my VX-6000 with the IR filter removed, you can see the IR sunlight coming through the display (3rd pic).
I’m concerned that the display may be blocking too much IR light.  I shined an 850nm IR laser through the display and it substantially dims the beam to the VX-6000.  It might be possible to scrape off some of the dark coating on the screen, but I think I might be asking for trouble.  Any suggestions?
Also, does anyone know if it is possible to shoot the IR light directly into the LCD panel instead of using an acrylic sheet?

You need acrylic above the lcd panel for FTIR to work , FTIR will probably work decently with your LCD , you can also use some DI filters to blur your blobs for better results.

I did a similar setup. The back side of LCDs are shinny I noticed but dont effect or interfere with any IR. You can point any remote control to your LCD and click some buttons and see the results through your camera. You will notice that IR from remote will pass through just fine.

And as Vlado mentioned, you need to put an Acrylic sheet infront of the LCD, thats where the magic happens, ofcourse with IR LEDs on all or couple of sides. Also make sure that your camera is modded before you start testing it fully.

Looks like it would work excellent .
You can probably eliminate the visible light filter that most of us have on our cameras.
I’d suggest you use a sheet of drafting under the screen to diffuse the lIR ight from below and the blobs from the acrylic above.
Looking forward to how it all works out. Keep us posted. wink
