I was wonder what the communities thoughts are on how we could use Augmented Reality in our tabletop interfaces.

Here is a basic AR example:

This is kind of like that, not really though.  I was gonna write a program for my table that allows me to bind a window to a blob.  So for instance, I could bind emacs(text editor) to my keyboard, and whenever I move the keyboard, emacs moves with it, just like they are one object.  I will do this when I get my table working(hopefully this week).

Hey Nuiman,

I did some tests on this here:

But my problem was that when I tried to incorporate this technique into my table, the camera I was using couldn’t detect the patterns properly due to the frosted glass under layer, and the IR reflection caused by my illuminators.

Now that I’m using lasers, it might not work properly. I’d be eager to see some results from others though. wink

This is fun, unlimited possibilities.
Fairlane, it was probably indeed your frosted glass in between that prevented the cam from recognizing the patterns.
Perhaps something more suitable for holoscreens or other partly transparent screen, IF you want to use the same camera that you use to find the blobs.
Of course an option is to have an extra camera, somewhere.

I know how cool is it! wink

Yeah changing the projection surface is the way to go I think. I’ll definately look into it though, thanks Harry.

In my view i dont think Augmented Reality can play a big role in MT table top table top, for vertical setups however there could be more uses for it, such as 3D environment modeling, maps, i can even think of tourism kiosks , where people on their maps have the patterns on specific locations, which bring up various facts, and historical information about the spot or what ever… the main reason, i dont think it has a place in tabletop setups is because our setups in general are rear projection and our cameras detect from behind, and i dont think there is any clear projection material available that will allow you to see the the patterns, in vertical setups you have the option of using something like the holo screen or plexiglas Vision screen which are near transparent, that may allow for the use of these patterns. Also if it were possible to use augmented reality in a table top environment i doubt that it can used in an effective manner.

I very much agree with Taha, its more for show off then for practical use.  There are still some uses for stuff like it, for instance binding a window to a blob.  Once 3D projection comes out I think it could have some uses, but that won’t for a while.

I think Aug has a big part to play.  My partner (business) and I have come up with many uses for it.  I personally can’t wait to start using at it, just need to get other stuff to work first…

Do you plan on using fiducial like markers?  I just can’t see this for much good except in VR kind of things.  Even in a tourist kiosk it would be kind of annoying to hold a map up to the screen.

The RPGer in me say use this to map and display characters for gaming. Might not be multi touch but would be good to see the fight between your char and a dragon. Or turn over the “treasure card” and find its a monster.

I wonder if you could find a way to make the fiducials visible to IR only. That way you could have an overhead projector and project onto a white card with an invisible marker.
Would make it a little bit more immersive.
