Artistic applications of NUI

I came to nuigroup attracted by the artistic potential of the hardware and software the community here has created. The demo apps show off so much potential. For example, when I saw the puppet being controlled by the hands, I realized how easy it would be to make puppet-like animations. It could lead to a new style that appeals to people not meticulous enough for 18-24 frames per second.

Creating applications is getting more accessible for people like myself, and tools like quartz composer or openframeworks are opening up a new world to me. I’m starting to realize that there are many healthy communities of people like myself who have already been experimenting and creating tools.

So I’m wondering, who at nuigroup is here for similar reasons? How has your experience been? What are your thoughts, goals?

As for me, I’ve been working on this since the end of may (memorial day in the u.s.). And by this, I pretty much mean everything, since I couldn’t figure out what do do with the software and had no idea how to do the hardware at the beginning of this. My table is working, but I need to make it more permanent (surprisingly, the cardboard box held together with gaffe tape isn’t giving me consistent results). In fact the whole process has been fairly painless. The group here really takes care of the details. I even wrote my first program last week using xelapond’s tutorials.

It’s a threshold that I needed to cross to not give up on it. I don’t think I’ll ever write a new video editor, but I’m betting I can do some cool things with colors and shapes.

Also, if any one is in the san francisco bay area I’d be interested in meeting up.

Hello smile

Our main focus is artistic/educational tools for youth rasberry

I agree 100%… open communities are key to our growth… we aim to align ourselves with projects like openframeworks, mozilla, ubuntu, google, etc…

I am in San Jose… so maybe sometime we could meet up and discuss the future, what languages/platform do you prefer?

I wouldn’t say I prefer a language - but python is almost instantly rewarding to learn with so I’ve been enjoying that. I pretty much just use macs any more because I use final cut pro a lot, and I don’t have an intel computer at home.

Our main focus is artistic/educational tools for youth

I just meant that there are so many potential applications of the technology developed here - gaming, music/audio, productivity, education. But personally I’m interested in how this can be applied to video/animation.

Even though my main attraction to this technology is musical/audio, since I am primarily a guitar instructor and home studio producer. I was looking around at Moving sketch http://www-ui.is.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~takeo/research/rigid/movingsketch/index.html and thinking that it is getting closer and closer to me being able to make animated videos to go with some of the movie soundtrack type music I have made.  I am working on the python language myself.

I am terribly excited at the strong open community and am honored to have found it.

I’m also interested in the music and art applications of touch and gesture-based systems, especially for applications for education.  I like the moving art application you linked.

There are a few resources on the Internet that work well on touch screens, even if they are not multi-touch enabled (yet!)

The National Gallery of Arts site for kids has some fun examples, too:  http://www.nga.gov/kids/

I have an HP TouchSmart, and came across the FotoViewr website this weekend and found that the browser is responsive to the Tablet PC gestures when moving the pictures around in 3D space.

The TouchSmart’s touch screen is from NextWindow. They have a multi-touch API that you can download from their website.  It works.  I’ve heard that future touch-screen all-in-one flat multi-touch screens are on their way.

I have a Nokia 800 (single touch) and I like playing Numpty Physics, a small screen version of Crayon Physics.

Numpty Physics: http://numptyphysics.garage.maemo.org/
Crayon Physics:  http://www.kloonigames.com/crayon/

(I still would like to build a table sometime, but right now I need to focus on applications.)

I think that art is the most natural to multi touch. I would like to see real time editing with a multi touch app.
