I just read this part in the article:

But on to the question most of the geeks have been asking: Can you rip out the cover and use it for your own projects?

Griffin says it should be possible — “We look forward to seeing what people do it” — although there isn’t any discrete input on the custom-designed circuit board that will control the e-paper. The data will be baked into the circuitry. Figuring out how to reprogram the e-paper controller or installing an entirely new one will be up to the hackers.

Good news about the battery, though: it should be trivial to replace.

“The batteries are pretty standard, small batteries,” says Griffin, some sort of coin cell battery that can be purchased from a variety of retailers. That means when the soldered-in battery dies after an estimated ninety days, replacing it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge.

Hopefully someone can get a new controller in there, so we can use standard inputs or something.

I’m so all over this! Thanks for the tip!
I’m calling Borders to see if they can reserve some copies for me.
I think three or four should do. I’ll probably destroy at least one in the process.

Can’t wait to see “what makes it tic”

Now if I could just connect with that MRI lab tech I used to know… smile

Make Magazine take a peek inside:
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/09/esquire_eink_cover_hackin.html

I think it’s out now - get shopping! There are only 100,000 copies and I think it might be US only.. Buy 3 copies, 1 to break, 1 to repair the broken one and 1 to sell in 20 years time.

Although they’re probably all on ebay:

Actually - I wouldn’t bother with it..

Judging from the video below the e-ink display cannot display arbitrary images because the image is already burned into the display, you can only control the sequence and timing of the sections. It is not, I repeat, NOT an addressable display, which is a shame.

Hey guys,

I just went down to the local Barnes and Noble, and bought all 3 copies that they had left. I’ll bring two of them with me when I’m in Europe for the IEEE Tabletop conference, so if anyone wants ‘em and is going to be there, just let me know and they’re yours.

Oof, I came across this thread *a bit* too late - Amazon has ‘em for $28 or more… http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001FT0T6U/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Oh well. eBay’s a bit more reasonable - some are close to the actual retail price. yay.
