Here are the IR LEDs I use that I found on Ebay. They have the exact same specs as the Osrams SFH485s and only cost $2.50 USD for 20 of them. I was able to buy 100 of them for just over $20 USD (including shipping). I also like the fact that they are from a manufacturer that I have heard of before, and have also purchased several perfectly functioning DVD drives from, Lite-on. Best part is they ship to the US for only $3.80 USD for a set of 20, MUCH better than having to pay $15+ for a set of 20…

Oh and the specs are:
5mm LEDs
880nm
1.5V
100mA
40 degree viewing angle

Chris

**Edit - Sorry..fixed broken link.

there are many with this “exact” specs, but u have to see the brightness and how mouch power u can give them without burn all rasberry

I cannot access the total specs… so, may be or may be not. Try a comparison, than tell us how good these LEDs are.

Well, I bought some from this guy (100) and then ended up buying 50 of the SFH485’s… The 485’s are MUCH MUCH MUCH brighter.

I know this is kind of an old post, but you’ll see that the Radiant intensity is 4.81 mW/sr! While you want around 100 mW/sr. I think I should fix this part of the Wiki as many people seem to be looking for a specific model in order to get bright LED’s when there are plenty of other brands around with the same intensity. I’ve actually placed an order for some 850nm IR LED’s with a radiant intensity of 140mW/sr (at 100mA) should be nice and bright.

Arch Angel - How did these LED’s work out for you? I see there is currently another auction running for the same set, and if they work well - would grab them.

Also, if you do recommend these… couple of quick questions:

1. Did you use 10 on each side (short side) of the acrylic?

2. What resistor did you use, and how often do you need to put in a resistor in (between each one)?

Thanks, I’m a noob… so, I appreciate the help!

Try eBay first, which is a lot cheaper most of the times. rasberry

Dont’ buy the ones off ebay (that we where talking about).  They really do suck.

I bought some SFH485 from here http://www.digikey.com/ and they worked GREAT!  They are in MN I believe.
