Accoring to CNET, Apple has filed a 30-page long patent on using proximity sensors with multi-touch technology.
So in order to interact with the device, you don’t even need to touch it anymore.
The patent seems to aim at devices bigger than the iphone, so apple’s surface computer may not me multi-touch but zero-touch!

Wow - that could have some amazing applications.

The proximity sensors could be composed of IR transmitters for transmitting IR radiation, and IR receivers for receiving IR radiation reflected by a finger or another object in proximity to the panel.

This sounds like something I saw on NUIGroup - I can’t seem to find the thread, but it was pretty cool - there was a video - it was based on the same idea. Anyone know what I’m talking about?

I would assume this would invalidate their patent, and this is probably what you are looking for rbedi100:
