Hello dear Taha,
First of all congrats for your fabulous job on your outstanding project!
It’s great to have experts like you in this community! guys like you help us
all the times and also give us hope (at least I get excited when you get
such great results!)

Anyway, it now more than a year that I’m working on multitouch screens and
I’ve mostly worked on experimental DI setups! but this time I’m in a tight
schedule to build a highquality one! so I thought that LLP suits my case
best! and I TRULY loved your results in Dubai Cityscape project! so I had
some questions and I thought no one would help me better than you in such
short time!

So let’s jump in:

1. Firstly I was fascinated by your projection screen and you’d mentioned
that it’s Blue Ocean acrylic rear projection screen and I searched for it!
but there were too many different results from different companies out
there! so I wanted to ask you if you could give me the exact name of it
(company, model...) and it’s URL address! and if it’s scratch resistable!

2. What was your video projector? you just mentioned that it’s Sanyo 4500
lumen projectors but what is the exact model?! and with what short throw
lens was it used exactly? ‘cause I was considering to use Epson EMP-400W
(which projects a 60” image in 64cm distance) but I wanted to use it in a
shorter distance most preferably without any mirror! so I wanted to ask you
if you think this is a good video projector and if I can use a short throw
lens with this video projector?!

3.What was the exact model of your IR Laser Modules? if you assembled a
diode with its circuit and power supply please tel me thier names and URL
addresses on the web! And if you know anything about Thorlabs IR Laser Diode
Modules please tell me if their solutions are good or not!

4. If you can give us a raw image input of your camera, please give me a
sample! (I wanted to see projection screen’s effect on the blobs!)

5. Do you know any video projector that gives us a 30” or larger image (not
80” in 8cm) but in 30cm or so throw distance! please give help me with it!

6. And the last but not least one, is if you can tell me what was your
camera’s lens (with URL address if possible) and if you know what would be
the result of using a 150 degree viewing angle lens? what happens with the
distortion? (’cause PS3’s 75 degree lens had <%1 destortion and didn’t suck
at all!)

I know this was a very long letter but I’m really sorry! ‘cause I’m running
out of time and I’ve gotta give some reports by tommorow! so I emailed you
to contact you in a much more quicker time and I thought you could help me
with all of my questions!

So please tell me what should I do, and I’d be very very greatful to have
your answers as soon as possible! and I promise I’ll document all of this
disscution and my own results (albeit if you want me to do so)

Again I’ve gotta thank you and somehow you were my only hope in such short
time! so please help me!

Thanks in advance Taha,

Kiarash Akhlaghi

I posted this here also because I thought maybe you, dear Taha, prefer to answer it in a public forum (or maybe he’s not checking his email anymore)

And I’d be greatful if anyone could help me with my questions ‘cause I’m in real need for help in short time!

Thanks Again!

Hi
1) I’ll try to help you as best as possible… I’m not exactly sure of the model number for the blue ocean screen we used but i believe it was Clarex Rear Projection Blue Ocean Screen you can find more info about it here http://www.usnippura.com/clarex_bos-c_rear_projection.htm
2) We used sanyo PDG-DWT50L http://us.sanyo.com/Projectors-by-Market-Business/PDG-DWT50L With Fixed Zoom Short Throw lens i don’t have the model number for that but i believe there is only one that fits this projector.
As for your requirements its going to be difficult to obtain a projector with that many lumens and a shorter throw distance than what you have. Even with this projector you will get about the same throw distance. but this projector cost around $5500 + $2000 for the short throw lens. Ideally i’d go with the Toshiba TDP-EW25U Projector which has 2600 Lumens and can project 60” from 72cm. But again if you want to go smaller you’d need to use a mirror.
3) we actually got our lasers custom built from a US manufacturer called Steminc, we used 850nm 10mW lasers. These guys were excellent they the shipped us the lasers we needed in like 2days. Excellent service.
4)You can actually see a raw image at 36sec in the video
Raw.jpg
5)I would look at http://us.sanyo.com/Projectors-by-Market-Business/PLC-XL51 or http://us.sanyo.com/Projectors-by-Market-Business/PLC-XL50 but both of these are extremely expensive and dont have a great resolution or number or lumens.. As i said before you have to compensate on things ...
6)We used a Tamron lens http://www.tamron.com/cctv/prod/13vm2811asir.asp
As for using a 150degree lens yes you will get a barrel effect but if you increase the number of calibration points in touchlib or tbeta it wont cause too much of an issue… you wont even notice it.

Hope this helps

I was looking for this blue ocean screen and what I found is that it is relatively proprietary technology were they fuse a layer of rear projection film into the acrylic. What I like best about this is that your touching a glass like surface.  Very sleek! My biggest question is how much would a screen like this cost?  I couldn’t find a price anywhere online.

Its not glass the outer layer is an acrylic/polycarbonate layer… but this is’nt really cheap at all but they look simply amazing though… something around 60” 4:3 would be close to around $4~5K USD

Taha:  Was wondering what cameras did you use for your screen and what bandwidth filter did u use?  As for the 4 screens, although u did not stitch the 4 output screens together in the actual show but i noticed that u guys did a short test where u merged the 4 screens together.  Did u stitch the 4 camera output together or did u just offset the outputs manually in OSC before u passed it out to flash?  And finally, how did u manage to combine the outputs of the final flash app onto the 4 screens as one?  Was it done in just one computer? or 4 different pcs?

I went with Point Grey FireFly MV (BW).
As for stitching… i first need to explain to you my setup. We had 4 separate computers all networked together. In all the 4 computers the same application was running just shifted in view. Essentially what we did was offset OSC for each screen… that’s how we got it to stitch. Essentially all the screens are receiving information about every input its just that flash knows at what coordinates to display on each screen.

We were using 850nm 10mW lasers thats why we went with 850nm +/- 40 for our AF bandpass filters
