I have found this acrylic and it’s extremely cheap! it’s about 22euro for 60x55cm. I tested it with FTIR and DI, and it’s simply amazing!

Looks nice.
Can you post more info?  Links, thickness, etc.
Cant wait to see more photos and vids!

You say you tested it with FTIR: so you put it under the acrylic that has the IR light bouncing around in it, like where the projection surface goes?

This does look very nice smile
A lot letter than the surfaces I’ve tried. Would be great if you could post some more info etc..

Is it bright when looking at the projected image? as it does appear to be towards the left of the image.

Yes yes, please do I think we could all use such a material!! It would be godly to get away from paint thiners and silicon!!

I got a piece of the acrylic Pole was talking about at the same shop.
It is called Plexiglas XT Satin Ice 0D010 DF, 3mm. “XT” stands for extruded acrylic, differently from the “GS” cast acrylic.
It is indeed a cheap solution as a rear projection surface (I paid 25 euros for a 66x48cm sheet), although I believe the Plexiglas Vision or even the Plexiglas Crystal Ice (of the same Satin plexiglas family) should work better… but I guess it costs more and it is less common.

I don’t know how and why but this morning I tried this FTIR set up:

::::::::::::: 10 mm plain transparent plexiglas (w/out any silicone or else on it) surrounded by a led ribbon (850nm at 22W)
_________ 3 mm plexiglas XT SatinIce (code 0D010 DF)

a projector and a 15 fps camera (QuickCam) with a piece of an old floppy disk on top of it.

...and it worked rather well!
I had to work on the cam and tbeta settings, but I got good blobs and it was nice to see as well!
I thought silicone was indispensable in a FTIR set up…

Did you get it online or in a brick and mortar store?

Would this be the “Crystal Ice” that you were talking about that would work as well?

I’m going to assume that if you get away from using the mylar/velum/rosco/etc and the silicon, you won’t be able to use anything on there other than your fingers, right?

But it looks really kewl.  Is that frosted on both sides, or just the one side?

sorry for being late…
i got that piece at a family based company that deals with plexiglas… i just happen to read the code on the plexiglas, so besides that i would not know how to help you in finding the same kind of plexiglas… it might even be out of stock/production already… one thing is sure: it is rather cheap (€ 20 for a 66x48 cm).
