First of all, thanks Ancalagon for the offer. Unfortunately I could not take advantage of it, but I appreciate it.

I ended up asking my local supplier for samples and they sent me all the 5 Acrylite screens, both Standard and Pro-Series. So I thought it could help others if I posted my impressions.

On one hand I found the Standard series to be actually better than I had expected for their price. They offer adequate image quality for screens that don’t require high resolutions, the hotspot is noticeable but not huge, the viewing angle is acceptable, the touch texture is fine, but the 3 mm thickness requires additional support. Anyway, it’s considerably better than Rosco or Lee Filters.

On the other hand, the Pro-series is simply amazing. What an image. And to be honest, I much preferred the 7D009. In comparison to the 7D006, it offers better contrast, wider viewing angle, superior resolution, and the touch texture is so much nicer. It’s not as bright, but I find it to be an advantage since the projected image does not hurt my eyes. It’s true that the bottom side is not matted as is the 7D006, but this material also requires an extra sheet of glass or acrylic to avoid sagging, which causes reflections anyway it you’re doing rear DI.

Point to remember: these impressions rely solely on 30 x 20 cm samples. It’s hands-on testing, but results may differ on large scale screens.

i would be really interested in a piece of 7D009. i think that this will be a better choice to track fiducials with it. in the recommended article http://www.ledstorm.net/?p=11 i found these two images regarding the contrast of images that are put directly on both sides of the 7D009 (why can’t i embed images in that post?):

matte side up: 114.jpg
matte side down: 113.jpg

thus, if i used fiducials i would get a better impression of my fiducials if i put the matte side up. how is the contrast with 7D006 if i put an image directly onto it? i would suggest that it looked like in 114.jpg.  am i right?

I would suggest watching the video on post #1. Ancalagon places several items on the screen that shows you how the 7D006 will look. My guess is that fiducials will show up very well with the 7D006.

hmm, the barcode looks pretty nice. it would be interesting to see it in comparison with the 7D009. unfortunately you can’t see the results with it in the video.

the thing is that reactivision is REALLY picky about the fiducial contrasts and i would always go for the best contrast possible and would even accept a hotspot.

what i am still wondering about is that the 7D006 should be matte on both sides just like the 7D009 is on one side. how can the contrast be so bad in 114.jpg?

i really need to get some scrap pieces to check things out…

I did a few tests, so let me try to explain. First, what I did was to simply put a printed page under the plexi, just like in the mentioned blog post.

For the 7D009, I confirmed what’s shown in the article. With the matte side facing the page, it’s easy to read it. Placing the page on the glossy side diffuses everything. But note one thing: the 7D009 has quite a low light transmission (only 24%), so even though contrast is good, the page looks pretty dark.

With the 7D006, I noticed something weird: as said, this material has both sides matted. But… the texture on the sides is quite different from one another, and both are quite unlike the matte side on the 7D009 (which is the nicest to touch IMHO). And… you can project the image on both sides of the 7D006, but one of the sides will show a noticeable texture. And this is exactly the way that will cause the page to be unreadable.

To sum up, with the 7D006, if you want the best image, you’ll have to sacrifice fiducials and touch the less textured side (not so nice). If you want fiducials, you’ll have to live with the textured image (which is not that bad but it’s definitely there), with the added benefit of touching the smoother side.

I know, it’s confusing. And hard to explain for a non-native English speaker. I’ll try to make some pictures if I can get my hands on a camera around here.

No worries, lagerkoller. Glad I could help.

Are you doing rear DI or DSI?

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

To help clear up the confusion about 7D006 and 7D009, I took two comparison pictures:
top surface with printed sheet of paper below
bottom surface with printed sheet of paper below

In both cases, the top side must be the top of your table, don’t confuse the top and bottom sides. The projection quality is superb on both materials.
In contrast to GFantini, I like the touch feeling of 7D006 better than 7D009. I guess that’s a matter of taste.

I’ve made some comparison photos to judge the image quality of 7D006 vs. 7D009.

Projected image at 0°, 45° and 90° viewing angle

Note: actually the room is not dark. Instead the projected image is so bright and clear that the digital camera adjusts brightness and makes the room look dark in comparison.

Has anyone used the 7D006 with LLP yet?

I’ve got a local supplier that can order in the product, but before I give the green light I’d like to make sure that it should work.

Could anyone try to shine a remote through the screen to see if a camera can see it? That should work, and it would give me enough confidence to know that I could get LLP working.

Thanks a ton!

Shining a remote through it definitely works. I’ve tried it before to calibrate my blank spots.

Awesome, thanks! I’ve found a supplier in Oklahoma that can order the plexiglas RP (and hopefully Endlighten), if anyone is interested I can get you the pricing information once I hear back from them.
