You know what just occurred to me?  You might want to do the version number thing that Ubuntu does: their version number is year.month in Y.MM format: 9.04, 8.10, 8.04, etc.  That might be good, except release a new one every month or every other month.  You simultaneously have a “normal-type” version number and a datestamp for your “release builds” - it’s a pretty good way of getting things done, especially since I’d imagine that, unlike software where you can have new large features or incompatible changes that cause you to increment the “major version number” (the part before the dot), the book won’t generally have such changes so often but rather a kind of continuous evolution, and some months might have large new content, but that would still be OK.

Thanks to all those who proofread the book and submitted bugs, feature requests, and feedback. At this point, we are prepared to release the stable version of the first edition of Multi-Touch Technologies. This version - the final version of the first printing (v1.1) is available here: http://nuicode.com/projects/wiki-book/files , along with the previous release. Please note the empty file indicating which release is most current. This is the book that will be going to the press, which we will have more details about shortly. At this point, any bugs and feature requests submitted will be a part of the next release of the book - v1.1 is ready to be printed.

To finally clarify the naming for versions: v.2.0 will be the next version that is printed (hard copy). Meanwhile, feature requests and bug fixes will be 1.2, 1.3, and so on. When 1.2 is released, there will be an announcement and posting in the NUI Code downloads for the book project. Bug fixes/feature additions between now and the 1.2 online release will be posted in the SVN regularly with a changelog.

Note that we are still working on the changelog which shows the differences between two versions - you’ll see it soon on SVN.

Once again, thanks!

The response to the poll was excellent - thanks to all those who voted. We have gone ahead with the printing process, through Lulu.com’s online printing services. A this point, we are still waiting for an ISBN number to allow distribution through Amazon.com and other retail channels to achieve maximum readership. Once the ISBN application process is completed, ordering information will be made available. Tentatively, the price for a copy of Multi-Touch Technologies is $7.00 USD, + shipping. We are working to lower this cost: it is not final.

And remember, the online pdf is 100% free! - the version that is going to the presses is available on the NUI code downloads, as described in the previous post.

Thanks!

Hello,

I would like to cite your book in a paper. How should I cite it?

Thanks in advance.

If you have some time, we are in the process of getting an ISBN number to increase the chance of citations, and make researcher and reader confident about the resource. If it’s not very urgent, please give us say 10 days and we will let you know about ISBN number and the exact bibliographical entry.

You can use the following for now (though it’s much dependent on the format of your paper - whether you are using APA style or any other citing styles):

Çetin, G., Bedi, R., Sandler, S. (2009). Multi-touch Technologies. 1st edition. Retreived from http://www.nuigroup.com

This is really a great book.

I’d add more information about practical aspects like woodworking and maybe a few additional photos of work-in-progress, which are really helpful for people with a poor technical background like me.

If we can manage to make the book content more uniform (and with less spelling/reference errors rasberry) I would love to buy a hardcopy smile.

Ok smile References are important...until/if we convert to LaTeX-type solution, if anyone has a good way to automatically cite refs from within InDesign that would be amazing.
