A turkish student pointed me to a nice looking IR illuminator on ebay they had in mind to use for their project.
So I thought I might as well buy one as well.

140 leds ir illuminator, 12 volt.
Lets see how this baby turns out.
I believe some other people here have some experience with similar illuminators, like whitenoise.

42 EUR including shipping and handling

Hey gravano… Just curious. I’ve read alot of posts about which LEDs to use, and most people are pretty particular about what LEDs they use for FTIR setups, particular relating to the wavelength of them. The Osram LEDs have in the 880nm range, for instance. I checked out the specs for the lamp you’ve mentioned, and it doesn’t give any specifics regarding the IR range. I’ve found this to be true about most of the Illuminators I have found online, and therefore have been reluctant to get one. Can you offer up some advice when looking for one?

Thanks!

Wow that’s cheap! I bought some of these:

http://www.virtuavia.eu/shop/short-range-ir-illuminator-140-led-40-60m-p29844.html

probably the same only a little more expensive (although i’ve seen them of twice that price).

btw. they work great, i really had to block the light which was far to bright for the small screen we’re using but for bigger screens this won’t be necessary.

hi gravano, how’s the IR illuminator? are you using the illuminator for a front DI or rear DI? i suppose if it is used for a rear DI, the light may not be even? or it would be?

it is pretty cool to have a huge screen especially when there are gonna be a lot of people. well, i still wondering if i should get such a large IR illuminator...because i kept having problems lighting up my fingers in my setup...but i am worry this IR illuminator is too bright and big and does not light up evening.

lol yeah, well we have to do proper research so we need a lot of equipment smile

@ barrante, I wouldn’t worry too much about the leds, if you have osram sfh485 or osram sfh485p leds you should be fine, some people use other ones that also work good, 950 nm works as well

@ xenon, it arrived last week, haven’t had time to play around with it yet, but as soon as we have i’ll put some pics and results up, dont know when that is going to be though. We wanted to test it with DI rear illumination. the light might indeed not be even, so we have to fix that with a diffuser and with some angling.

@ rotflol I think for flooding an dark area with IR and than put an IR cam on it, so thiefs think they are same but they are being filmed or so?

@xenon, use a diffuser

cool....i will checking the site for your updates on this gigantic IR lamp! haha!
i am using a tracing paper as a diffuser right now below an acrylic.

by the way, just being curious, have you wrapped the diffuser to the lamp before to try? haha…
