The ACD’s are LCD so I was wondering if anyone thinks its possible to use one for multitouch?

I already know how to disassemble one (don’t ask why) and would prefer working with an lcd monitor.

And also if I were to put plexiglas over the LCD for protection would it still work?

Basically you can. Here is a few projects in which people try to use LCD-display as image source. (Myself for example)
I haven’t disassembled ACD but technique should be same in every LCD-monitor. Here is few things I have learned:

-LCD-display lets IR light trough (except the last layer of reflective material which has to be removed)
-In my old display the circuit boards which run the actual display panel come at way for using camera, so it is not possible to use my display without modifications. you´ll find picture of this from my blog.  I don’t know of ACD. If you post pictures of disassembling it, it would be nice.
-It is not possible to use DI-solution with LCD:s original backlight installation, because the diffusor sheets reflect IR very strongly.
-LCD-display is very sensitive to dirt and objetcs between backlight source and display panel
-Best solution would be capasitive sensing (it is hard to build tough), but as far as i understand these things the FTIR-system using LCD-display is very doable.

The ACDs use polarized filters to create the glossy effect, could this be a problem?

ACD’s are a kinda expensive solution to this, how about you sell it, and get a larger, cheaper display. You might even have enough money left over for a iphone, or four.

I’m working on basicaly the same project but with FTIR, not DI check my blog for more info…
